Holgate was born in Oldham on 24 January 1869. He studied art at the Bushey School of Art. He also studied music at Trinity College of Music, London. He was highly respected both as a musician and conductor. As an artist he exhibitied at a number of galleries including The Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. He settled in Cornwall in 1932, first living in Constantine and then 4 Stratton Place, Falmouth. He was a close friend with the artist Frank Jameson. He died on 9 August 1958 at 12 Glenville Road, Truro.
